Pizza is one of the most loved foods on the planet. But where
did it all begin? The story of pizza is a fascinating journey
through history, culture, and tradition.
Ancient Origins
Flatbreads with toppings have existed for thousands of years
across many cultures — from ancient Egypt to Greece and Rome.
But the pizza we know today was born in Naples, Italy.
Naples: The Birthplace of Modern Pizza
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Naples was a bustling, densely
populated city. Street vendors sold flatbreads topped with
tomatoes, cheese, oil, and garlic to working-class people
looking for a cheap, filling meal. This was the true origin
of pizza.
The Margherita Legend
In 1889, pizza maker Raffaele Esposito created a special pizza
for Queen Margherita of Savoy. He topped it with tomatoes,
mozzarella, and fresh basil — representing the colours of the
Italian flag. The Queen loved it, and the Margherita pizza
was born.
Pizza Goes Global
Italian immigrants brought pizza to the United States in the
late 19th and early 20th centuries. From New York to Chicago,
pizza evolved and adapted to local tastes. Today, pizza is
enjoyed in virtually every country in the world.
Pizza Today
From Neapolitan classics to creative gourmet variations, pizza
continues to evolve. At Champignons, we honour the traditional
roots of Italian pizza while adding our own modern touch.
Because pizza isn’t just food — it’s culture, history,
and community on a plate.
